Numbi was a true Rain Queen. That means she had extraordinary power over the clouds. She could generate rain for her people and their allies. Water was essential for their survival and happiness because nature, harvest and daily life depended on it. Through magic rain ceremonies, Numbi also had the power to cause drought in the land of her enemies. That sometimes came in handy. A Rain Queen leads a dynasty in which the mothers in families hold the highest authority. There, women are in charge, unlike in most societies where men and fathers dominate.
You can’t just become a Rain Queen. It is an inherited position. But, does that happen in a community formed by women? Well, the people determine which man is suitable to help continue the bloodline. He must, therefore, come from a good family. However, the Rain Queen does not have to marry him; he can marry someone else. The Rain Queen trains her daughter, the princess by teaching her all the rituals and magical knowledge she will need to lead and serve her people. That’s how leadership stays in the family. Even today there are African dynasties that are led by Rain Queens. However, they are no longer many. That’s a shame.
