In the past, every clan or tribe – a group similar to a very, very large family -had a totem animal. The clan was named after its totem animal. It was the protector of that animal, and by extension, also the protector of the environment where the animal lived. This was probably the first form of nature protection initiative. The clan deemed their totem animal as ‘sent by God’. There are still clans today who have the lion or other animals as their totem animal. They are proud of this special connection between humans and animals, Rightly so, they feel responsible for their animal’s well-being.
